About TU Bergakademie Freiberg

The Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg was founded in 1765 as a mining academy and is regarded as the world's oldest mining and metallurgy university. Since 1993 it has borne the name Technische Universität and educates students at six faculties in the fields of mathematics and computer science, chemistry, physics and life sciences, geosciences, geotechnology and mining, mechanical engineering, process and energy engineering, materials science and materials technology, as well as economics. Its research focuses are the exploration, extraction and processing of raw materials, the development of materials and engineered materials, energy systems, and processing and recycling methods for a sustainable circular economy. The university has laboratory and technical facilities including in foundry and forming technology, glass, ceramics, process engineering and additive manufacturing, as well as an underground research and teaching mine (Reiche Zeche). At the Freiberg location there is close networking with the Helmholtz Institute for Resource Technology (HIF), Fraunhofer institutes and EIT RawMaterials, whose Regional Center Freiberg is based at TUBAF.
