About TerraVac

TerraVac develops and sells a film-based vacuum insulation technology based on perlite powder in a vacuum-tight envelope made of high-barrier film. Founded in 2012, the corporate start-up based in Karlstadt is a 100% subsidiary of the Liebherr Group and presented the technology to the public for the first time in 2022. The film-based 3D vacuum body system solution is the first of its kind worldwide to be integrated into series production processes and eliminates thermal bridges, as almost any shapes such as pipes, panels, boxes and vessels can be completely encased. In addition to product development, TerraVac manufactures prototypes and small systems as well as metrology equipment for vacuum insulation. The material perlite is a natural, renewable volcanic rock which, according to the company, is significantly more cost-efficient at comparable thermal performance than silica-based vacuum insulation panels. The target is end products and industrial applications, in particular thermal and cold insulation.

Materials and Processes

Perlit

Perlite (expanded volcanic rock / perlite powder)

Core material of the vacuum insulation; natural, non-toxic, inert and fully recyclable.

HBF

High-barrier film (plastic layers with ultra-thin

Vacuum-tight envelope that reduces gas ingress and can be joined to components by heat.

Kieselsäure

Silica (reference/predecessor VIP technology)

Previous standard of vacuum insulation technology, replaced by the perlite solution.
