About thyssenkrupp Carbon2Chem®
thyssenkrupp Carbon2Chem® is a project of thyssenkrupp Decarbon Technologies funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) that deals with the utilization of CO₂-rich blast furnace gases. As part of the project, blast furnace gases from steel production are converted by chemical processes into valuable basic chemicals such as methanol, ammonia and plastics. To this end, established technologies of the Group are integrated, including flue gas cleaning systems from thyssenkrupp Uhde, PureOxyfuel cement plants from thyssenkrupp Polysius and alkaline water electrolyzers from thyssenkrupp nucera. Since 2018, the project team has been operating, together with partners from industry and science, a 2-MW pilot plant for alkaline water electrolysis at the thyssenkrupp Steel Europe site in Duisburg, where individual processes are tested under real industrial conditions. With more than 144 million euros in BMBF funding and, since 2025, a third project phase with 50 million euros in funding, the findings are being scaled up to industrial level. The goal is the decarbonization of industrial processes in hard-to-abate sectors such as steel, cement, ammonia and coking plants.
