Torfbrand-Klinkerwerk J.B. Kaufmann in Nenndorf is a family business that has been producing peat-fired architectural clinker since 1904. The clinker bricks are fired in a hand-fired ring kiln – a craft production process that the company has cultivated for over 100 years. The shape and colouring of each brick are the result of around 14 days of heat as well as the experience and skill of the kiln masters. After firing, every brick is a one-off with individual characteristics that cannot be reproduced in industrial mass production. The clinker bricks are sorted by hand, and expressive reference projects from architecture and construction demonstrate the use of the material, among other places in Bremerhaven, Berlin, Munich and Ringe.
