About USUM
USUM Grundstoffaufbereitung und Service GmbH is a medium-sized recycling company based at Am Alten Tagebau 1 in Steigra, in the heart of the Karsdorf industrial estate in Saxony-Anhalt. Founded in 1992, the company composts biowaste, green waste, sludges and other plant-based waste into RAL-certified compost. Mineral lime fertiliser is produced from bottom and boiler ashes from the combustion of untreated natural wood. Concrete and brick rubble is processed into RC-certified recycled crushed stone; in addition, USUM produces soil substrates through its own soil exchange. The portfolio of services also includes landscaping and gardening, remediation contracts, recultivation and renaturation, demolition work, caretaker services and property management. Reference projects include, among others, the recultivation of the Karsdorf landfill and the delivery of topsoil for the construction of the A 38 motorway. As part of the UNTERNEHMENREVIER funding project, USUM is developing a process for upcycling the coarse fraction of natural wood ash into boiler gravel, with a targeted end-of-waste declaration. The company is a certified waste management specialist company in accordance with the EfbV.

Quality and certification
USUM is certified as a waste management specialist company in accordance with the Waste Management Specialist Companies Ordinance (EfbV) by the technical monitoring organisation BRANDT Management; the compost is RAL-certified and the recycled crushed stone is RC-certified.
