About Van Baerle / Silin
Van Baerle chem. Fabrik GmbH & Co. KG was founded in 1838 in Gernsheim am Rhein and for over 175 years produced waterglass (alkali silicates), mineral paints of the Silin brand as well as washing and cleaning agents. The company was regarded as Germany's oldest waterglass factory and was the only German manufacturer that produced its potassium waterglass binder itself – with over 100 waterglass variants matched to the mineral paint formulations. The solid alkali silicates were obtained by a melting process from alkali carbonates or alkali sulfates, sand and coal; the mineral paints were based on natural raw materials such as rock flour, sand, potash and alkali-stable mineral pigments. Fields of application included the building materials industry, coating technology, laundries, dairies, the metal, soap and paper industries as well as the conservation of historic buildings. Operations were discontinued from June 2014; the last employees were bid farewell at the end of 2015. There is no legal successor; the brands and formulations remain the property of Van Baerle chem. Fabrik GmbH & Co. KG and Silinwerk Van Baerle & Co. GmbH.

Distribution
Raw materials and processes
Potassium waterglass (alkali silicates)
Binder produced by a melting process from alkali carbonates or alkali sulfates, sand and coal, used for mineral paints and detergents.
Metasilicates
Crystallized or granulated alkali silicates with high cleaning power for washing and cleaning agents.
Mineral paints (silicate paints)
Paints based on natural raw materials with high diffusion capacity, weather resistance and non-flammability.
Sand
Starting raw material (silica carrier) for the waterglass melt and the mineral paints.
Rock flour
Natural filler in the Silin mineral paints.
Potash (potassium carbonate)
Alkali raw material for the in-house potassium waterglass production.
Alkali-stable mineral pigments
Pigments that enable colour brilliance and durability of the silicate paints.

Quality
Product manufacturing was carried out with the utmost care throughout the entire production process and with a defined quality assurance system; external confirmations existed in particular for the high water vapour diffusion capacity.
