About the Combine
The VE Kombinat Maschinenbauhandel Berlin was founded in 1981 and replaced the previously existing Staatliches Maschinen-Kontor (SMK). As a wholesaler, the enterprises of the combine – with the exception of direct procurement relationships – served the material supply of the GDR economy with mechanical engineering products and electrotechnical products; reserve trading with unused or not fully utilised machine and material reserves was also among its tasks. The wholesale assortment comprised around 310,000 articles in 1988 from 58 domestic combines and 16 foreign trade enterprises; around 25,000 consumers were supplied with metal products. With an average stock value of around 2.1 billion marks, a supply output worth around 9 billion marks was achieved in 1988. The combine maintained 501 properties, including 383 warehouses and 78 specialised retail stores. In the course of reunification it was dissolved in 1990 and converted into MBH Maschinenbau- und Technikhandel AG, Berlin.
