About Volterion
Volterion was founded in 2015 as a spin-off of the Fraunhofer Institute UMSICHT in Dortmund and develops stacks for flow batteries – the heart of stationary energy storage systems. In the stack, a compact arrangement of several electrochemical cells, electrical energy is stored in a liquid medium, the electrolyte. The technology is characterized by long service life, cycle stability and independent scalability of storage capacity and power. Since the Boysen Group took over the majority stake in 2019, Volterion has manufactured the latest stack generation in automated series production at its production partner Boysen, thereby using its global production network with 25 locations and an automation level of well over 90 percent. Every stack undergoes defined quality assurance and testing procedures along the entire production chain, from incoming goods inspection through in-process monitoring to final inspection. Typical applications are self-consumption optimization, peak shaving and the expansion of charging infrastructure, from pilot installations to large-scale systems in the multi-megawatt range.
