About the Winery
The Weingut August Kesseler GmbH & Co. KG is a VDP winery in Assmannshausen, a district of Rüdesheim am Rhein in the Rheingau. Founded in 1924, the estate was taken over by August Kesseler at the age of 19 as a 2.5-hectare bulk wine operation and developed into an internationally renowned winery with nearly 40 hectares of vineyards. The focus is on Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder) and Riesling from sites such as the Assmannshäuser Höllenberg, the Rüdesheimer Berg Schlossberg and the Lorchhäuser Seligmacher; all vineyard sites are classified as VDP.ERSTE LAGEN® and VDP.GROSSE LAGEN®. Vinification takes place in a wine cellar hewn into the slate of the Höllenberg in 1792: Riesling is fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks, while Pinot Noirs are aged for up to 22 months in barrique barrels after open maceration fermentation. The winery works with the certified quality management system EcoStep Wein PLUS and is located in the midst of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley cultural landscape, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002.
