About the Winery
The Prinz von Hessen winery in Johannisberg in the Rheingau belongs to the Hessian House Foundation and was acquired in 1957 by Philipp Landgrave of Hesse. Today it cultivates 33 hectares of vines, of which around 22 hectares (nearly 70 percent) were classified as Erstes Gewächs in the 1999 site classification. About 90 percent of plantings are Riesling, along with Weißburgunder (Pinot Blanc), Merlot and Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), grown mainly in the Johannisberger Klaus, Winkeler Hasensprung, Winkeler Jesuitengarten and Kiedricher Sandgrub sites. The estate works close to nature with selective harvesting, gentle pressing, chilled sedimentation and chilled fermentation. White wines mature in stainless steel tanks, red wines for ten to twelve months in barriques; since 2008 some top Rieslings have been aged traditionally in wooden casks. The winery, organised in the VDP and DLG, is led by Donatus Prinz von Hessen and director Bärbel Weinert and also markets its wines through its own online shop.
