About the Winery
Weingut Welzin is an agricultural family business in Welzin on the island of Usedom, run by Christoph Kühne-Hellmessen. The family has been based on Usedom for 30 years and, with over 40 years of experience in organic farming, grows wine according to organic-biological guidelines. Fungus-resistant (PIWI) grape varieties are planted in the form of a Gemischter Satz (field blend) of seven varieties: Sauvignac, Muscaris, Solaris, Rinot, Ravel blanc, Soreli and Fleurtai. Plant protection is limited to effective microorganisms and fruit lime; mineral fertilisation and synthetic plant protection are dispensed with. The grapes are harvested by hand, fermented spontaneously with natural yeasts and aged in oak barrels and steel tanks without filtration or additives. The result is a terroir-driven natural wine (KÜHN&HELL), sold from the farm, via the farm wine shop in Welzin, and through distribution partners such as KaDeWe Berlin and restaurants on Usedom. The winery is ABCERT-certified (EU control number DE-MV-006-33453-AB) and also offers holiday packages on the farm.
