About the Museum
The Werra Potash Mining Museum in Heringen (Werra) is a special museum on the history of potash mining in the Werra-Fulda district. On more than 1,000 square metres of exhibition space, it documents the technical development above and below ground, the geology of the salt deposit, and the social and cultural changes brought about by industrialisation in the potash district. The exhibition includes original devices, tools and tonnes-heavy, operational machines as well as models, graphics, films, computer presentations and photographs. The museum is run by the Förderkreis des Werra-Kalibergbau-Museums, a registered association (VR 638, Bad Hersfeld Local Court). In addition to the permanent exhibition, the museum offers heap tours at Monte Kali, a travelling exhibition 'Forced Labour on the Werra', contemporary witness interviews and a digitally accessible collection. Since 1 October 2022 the museum has been closed due to energy-efficiency renovation of the building and a reconception of the exhibition; reopening is planned for spring 2028.
