About the Museum

The Westfälisches Schieferbergbau- und Heimatmuseum Holthausen is a museum in the Holthausen district of Schmallenberg in the Hochsauerlandkreis, run by the Museumsverein Holthausen e.V. It grew out of a collection that began in 1974 in the cellar rooms of the local elementary school and opened in 1975 in a former school building. Across more than 2.500 qm of exhibition space, slates and rocks, folklore and local history with the animal and plant life of the forest, past ways of living and working, and the economic life of the Sauerland are displayed. The departments cover slate mining with the museum's own visitor adit, natural history, textile processing, folklore, an old print shop and bookbinding workshop, as well as art. Since 1984 there has been a permanent exhibition on witch trials in the Electoral-Cologne Sauerland. Since 2009, the attached Südwestfälische Galerie has shown regional art from the 19th and 20th centuries.
