Who we are
Wohnprojekt Gerthe is a registered housing cooperative based at Gewerkenstrasse 12 in Bochum-Gerthe. It was founded in 1983 as a self-managed association to create affordable housing for students. Following a comprehensive core renovation carried out under its own management, the former forced labourers' barracks of the Zeche Lothringen colliery were converted into living space for more than 80 people. The community lives and organises itself on an equal footing; decisions are made in the weekly WohnGruppenRat (housing group council). The project strives for an ecologically sustainable lifestyle and has also been engaged since the 2000s in the historical reappraisal of the former forced labour camp of the Zeche Lothringen colliery. The company is not active as a manufacturing or supplier business; its origins as a housing project are evident from the details below. The cooperative is registered under GnR 243 at the Bochum local court.
