About Zweckverband Wasser und Abwasser Suhl
The Zweckverband Wasser und Abwasser Suhl (ZWAS) is a public-law corporation headquartered in Zella-Mehlis and ensures public water supply and wastewater disposal in its region. The association operates drinking water supply and drinking water treatment, wastewater treatment at its own treatment plants as well as sludge removal, supplying and treating for around 64,000 residents. The head office and the Drinking Water division are located in Zella-Mehlis, while the Wastewater division operates the Suhl wastewater treatment plant as well as the Zella-Mehlis wastewater treatment plant. In addition to classic public services, ZWAS processes wastewater discharge applications and prepares site assessments for construction projects. The use of renewable energy is highly valued: biogas from wastewater treatment is used for power generation, waste heat for producing heating energy, and the association's own photovoltaic systems cover part of the energy demand. At one treatment plant, raw water is treated using the natural water pressure and solar energy.
